Christians can do all things, but there is one thing they find hard to do and that’s praying. Why do so many Christians find it difficult to pray and some even feel they can’t pray at all? Kitab Suci ngandika, that they can’t pray because the flesh can’t pray. What does it mean the flesh can’t pray and what do you have to do, so that you can pray?
Jesus prayed fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane
And He came unto the disciples, and found them asleep, lan ujar marang Petrus, Apa, could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch lan ndedonga, that you enter not into temptation: roh pancen gelem, nanging daginge ringkih (Matius 26:40-41)
When Jesus went to the Taman Gethsemane, the spiritual battle against His soul began. Jesus took three of His disciples with Him to pray. These three disciples were Peter, John, lan James.
As they went into the garden, Jesus said that His soul was exceeding sorrowful, malah nganti mati. Jesus commanded His disciples to tarry there, and to watch with Him.
Jesus went a little further into the garden. He kneeled and prayed to His Father, if it will be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.
After one hour of prayer, Jesus returned to His three disciples. But instead of finding them praying, Jesus found them asleep.
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak
Jesus asked Peter, why they were not able to pray and watch with Him, for one hour? No one responded to Jesus’ question. The disciples were not able to pray and watch with Jesus and fight this spiritual battle with Him.

Jesus knew what was going on and what was going to happen. Jesus knew exactly when it was time to lay down His life and to suffer for humanity.
How did Jesus know that it was time to lay down His life? Because in the visible realm, there were no signs nor indications, that His time had come. But Jesus knew that His time had come to die, because Jesus didn’t walk after the flesh but after the Spirit.
Jesus didn’t walk according to what He perceived with His senses. Hij wasn’t led by His senses. But Jesus was controlled by the Spirit. He was constantly connected with the Father and the Holy Spirit and prayed and watched.
Why did Jesus watch?
Jesus was grieved, distressed, and deeply depressed. He asked Peter, John, and James to watch with Him, because His soul was exceeding sorrowful, malah nganti mati. Yesus ngerti, that the time had come, that He would be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Dheweke ngerti, that He would be crucified and kurban for humanity and carry all the sins and iniquities of the world.
It was a spiritual battle, between His spirit and the flesh. Because His soul was encompassed with grief even to the point of death.
Jesus experienced the same feelings as every person experiences. That’s why Jesus is our High Priest.
Jesus came in the likeness of sinful flesh and was tempted in all things, just like every person on this earth.

Jesus prayed to the Father and struggled to the point of agony.

Why did the disciples of Jesus have to watch?

Yen padha dosa, padha bakal sijine piyambak kanthi otomatis ing panguwasa setan. Dosa bakal mrentah ing urip lan tujuan pungkasan yaiku pati. Amarga opahing dosa iku pati (wong Romawi 8:5-8).
Mulané Gusti Yésus ngélingké murid-muridé supaya jaga lan ndedonga. Supaya wong-wong mau ora mlebu ing panggodha lan nglakoni apa-apa sing nglawan kersané Gusti Allah.
Roh arep ndedonga, nanging daging ora bisa ndedonga
Roh gelem lan kepengin ndedonga, nanging dagingmu ora bisa ndedonga. Anggere dagingmu mrentah ing uripmu, sampeyan ora bisa ndedonga lan nonton. Delengen murid telu mau. Dheweke durung lair maneh, nanging wong-wong kuwi murid sing paling setya ing antarané Yésus’ para murid.
Wong-wong mau mèlu lan manut marang Gusti Yésus ing samubarang kabèh, lan tresna marang Gusti Yésus. Dene murid-murid liyane padha mundur lan ninggal Gusti Yesus, marga saka pangandikane kang angel lan kayekten kang diwartakake dening Gusti Yesus. Nanging murid telu mau ora ninggal Gusti Yésus lan dadi murid sing paling setya ing antarané murid rolas. Mulané Yésus takon marang murid telu mau, kanggo gabung karo Panjenengane ing pandonga lan nonton karo Panjenengane (Maca uga: ‘Nderek Gusti Yesus bakal mbayar kabeh').
